Vitamin D

By VQ1Professional review pending · updated

What it does

Vitamin D governs how much calcium and phosphorus are taken up from the feed and deposited in the skeleton. Unlike most nutrients, the ration is only one of two sources here: in daylight the skin produces the vitamin itself.

Why it matters

Without vitamin D even the best calcium content in a ration achieves little — it is the link between feed and bone. In horses, though, its role in calcium balance is smaller than in other species.

When it becomes critical

Undersupply is barely described in horses that see daylight. The risk clearly sits at the top end: horses react sensitively to overdosing, up to calcium deposits in vessels and organs. Anyone combining several vitaminised compound feeds should keep an eye on the total.

How much a horse needs

Maintenance: about 3,200 IU a day for a 500 kg horse — little compared with other vitamins. With supplementation, restraint is the better direction.

Careful when comparing: the requirement is given **per day**, the upper limit **per kilogram of feed dry matter**. These are different reference bases and cannot be compared directly. The upper limit is also not a target — it is the amount at which harm begins.

A maximum per meal applies per meal and per kilo of horse — not per kilo of feed. Two small meals can add up to more while each stays below the limit.

“Metabolic body mass” is a calculated figure, not a weight: body weight to the power of 0.75. For 600 kg that is about 121 — the requirement is multiplied by that figure, not by 600. This is why the number looks small when it is not.
